The stony Dentelles peak at 755 meters altitude and are home to lovely perched villages with narrow streets and shady squares. A lovely drive through the Dentelles takes in the scenery, villages and countryside. Biking and hiking are also very popular. The loop road takes you through the Dentelles and into the villages, such as Suzette, built atop a rocky spur, far from the hustle and bustle of modern day. Then comes La Roque Alric in a splendid setting of vineyards, hills and blue sky. The village of Le Barroux stands tall and proud, around a feudal château, with a sea of olive groves at its base. On the other side of the Dentelles lies the town of Beaumes de Venise, ranked as an “outstanding good taste site” for its remarkable olive oil and superb Muscat wine. Beyond Beaumes-de-Venise, you arrive in Vacqueyras and Gigondas, both deservedly famous for this vintages.
Small villages – famous names !
At slightly higher altitude, we come to Séguret, in a beautiful setting reminiscent of the Provencal crèche scene. Séguret is ranked as “One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France”. |
