Altera Rosa
Avignon
17-19 May
For the past 3 years, Avignon has celebrated spring with a great rose show: Altera Rosa (in reference to Altera Roma the other name for the Papal city of Avignon. This grand fête de la rose takes place in the prestigious Benedict XII cloister, and in the palace gardens, opened specially for the event.
The greatest French and foreign rose growers now present heretofore unseen roses to public in this great avant-première. True marvels, unveiled to the public for the first time at the Altera Rosa rose show. In addition to the rose exhibition, take advantage of the events, conferences, workshops and meetings – all of which add to your knowledge about the Queen of flowers.
Care, maintenance, pruning, the use of rose essence… and many other subjects. A splendid event in a unique setting.

Contemporary art pays homage to Cézanne
Avignon
Exhibition until 20 May 2007
The Collection Lambert, contemporary art museum in Avignon, proposes an exhibit whose title expresses the fundamental role played by Paul Cézanne, a century after his death.
The exhibition displays nearly 40 contemporary artists whose works refer – with great vitality – to several themes dear to Cézanne. Still life is the subject of a famous video by Sam Taylor-Wood, outstanding collages and watercolours by Miquel Barcelo, photographs of assemblages of coloured pastilles by Vik Muniz, which represent the famous still lifes by Cézanne. e.
Photographers Rineke Dikjstra, Pascal Martinez, Nan Goldin and Cindy Sherman, magnify adolescent bathers, awkward with their changing bodies, or lovely naiad – women diving into the waters of a river. Two drawings by Paul Cézanne will add to the new and enriching confrontations displayed here, stimulating for the eye and the mind.
