Jean Henri FABRE :Entomologist, poet, writer, teacher, musician, humanist and self-taught genius.
Visit his home, the “HARMAS” in SERIGNAN and the lovely botanical garden.

François PETRARQUE (1304/1374) : Famous Italian poet, Petrarch was the one of the early great humanists of the Renaissance. His glory comes primarily from his poems, sonnets and “Rimes” and “Triomphes”, composed in honor of LAURE DE NOVES, gathered in the “Canzonière” published in 1470. Petrarch lived for many years in Vaucluse (Avignon, Fontaine de Vaucluse) and is also known for the description of his ascension of Mont Ventoux.

DONATIEN ALPHONSE FRANCOIS, MARQUIS DE SADE (1740/1814)
The Marquis de Sade was a French writer, whose work was both the theory and illustration of sadism.
See: the castle which rises above the village of LACOSTE. It became the property of the de Sade family in 1710. It now belongs to Pierre Cardin and is not open to the public, except during the Summer Festival. Also see the Château de Mazan, now a prestigious hotel.

ALBERT CAMUS (1913/1960), Nobel prize in 1957. Camus’ tomb is in the cemetery in LOURMARIN, where he lived.

HENRI BOSCO (1888/1976), author born in Avignon. There is a descriptive plaque on his home. Author of novels based in the region. Buried in Lourmarin in the Luberon, where he lived at the time of his death.

RENE CHAR(1907-1988), poet, born in Isle sur la Sorgue. Char’s work was strongly influenced by “this piece of the country” where he lived most of his life. He evokes the incomparable beauty of the Sorgues area in his poetry.

NICOLAS DE STAEL(1914-1955) Artist, lived in Ménerbes in the Luberon as of 1952, where he explored still life. The quality of the light led De Stael to turn to landscapes. Up until his stay in the Luberon, he painted at night by artificial light.
