Avignon, the city of the Popes: I approach by crossing the Rhone. The panorama is magnificent. I see the famous “Pont d’Avignon”, star of the song, where everyone danced in a circle. The Palace of the Popes stands tall behind the ramparts that ring the old city. No wonder it is part of the World Heritage for all Humanity ! I stroll through the medieval streets, lined with old city mansions with Italianate façades, and recall that Avignon was truly the “Other Rome” during the 14th century.
Church bells chime as I reach the Place de l’horloge at just the right time – the time to sit back at a sidewalk café and watch the world go by. I’ll come back I promise myself, in July during the Avignon festival, and watch the theater troupes wend their way through the city, full of effervescence.
